SCENES FROM THE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE SEMINAR HELD ON THE 7/10/2009

The Autumn Seminars in a series of three under the title "Make your Own Identity" came to an end with the last one around Education Training and Apprenticeships.

The first one which took place on the 24th September 2009 concentrated around Violence and Crime and was a very well attended seminar with some very interesting information around youth gangs and the issue that carrying an offensive weapon is not the solution to self defence as those present were shown images of a teenager killed by the very weapon that she carried.

The YOS and the YEP with Paul Sutton from the MP and Sergeant Neil Standring respectively gave information as to the work carried by these services.
Superintendent Dave Osborn said the police are doing a lot of work in community and are engaged with the youth in Enfield educating them about the dangers of getting involved with gangs.

On the Drugs and Alcohol Abuse Lesley Johnson and Faye explained in detail the valuable work that is carried out in the community in Schools and Colleges and the the two former users gave shocking and moving revelations as to how they ended up being hooked on drugs for 15 years by just experimenting and gave an in-depth talk on the adventures and difficulties they faced and how they are today cured.

It was a very Educational and emotional seminar but sometimes these shocking revelations can help people appreciate the danger of getting involved with drugs.

The last Seminar for this year in these series was around Education Training and Apprenticeships.

A number of young people and in an audience of all ages heard experts on this field as to how young can get further training and education and how they can apply for Apprenticeships.
Joan Ryan M.P. gave a talk as to how much the government are doing to promote Apprenticeships on a national level with a variety of choices. Soula Christodoulou sixth form Assistant Director to Learning and gave in detail information the various projects Barnet is involved in and Neil's Rousell Joint Director of Children's Services London Borough of Enfield gave power point presentation on the stages from 14 to 19 what is expected of the students to achieve in as far as exams and grades are concerned and what route to follow to enable them to choose the right subject / s they will like to pursue.

John Burke gave a talk around the services provided by the Enfield Training Services (ETS)
and presented one of the successful candidate who with the help of ETS found an apprenticeship to help him in his career and how at the same time others are trained while attending courses to further their education.

Judy Flight from the Enfield Place Shaping and and Tony Wallis from the employment development management brought to everybody's attention the variety of services and the offices that are based at Edmonton Green who are providing help and guidance to those who may wish to find an employer for apprenticeships ,
Judy Flight said that they have good working relationship with the private sector and businesses who may be in a position to offer jobs and apprenticeships.

Those present did approach the officers and wanted more information and arrangements were made to see the officers at some stage in the future.

The seminars are Funded by Be Safe Feel Safe Stronger Safer Communities
and The Lottery Awards For All in coperation with Lefkara Association of Great Britain a local charity under the number 295494Cllr George Savva MBE said "I will like to thank everyone who have contributed towards the success fo thee seminars sponsored by Lottery Award For All, and Be Safe Feel safe Stronger Safer Communities Board. "I know it is not easy" he continued "to stage such seminars but it was mede easy as I have had to deal with very professional people who are masters in their field and are great team players accompanied with a spirit of cooperation and understanding "." I will like to thank them all for their contribution and for giving up their free time to share their knowledge and by doing so to helping others to get to find out more on the subjects that were covered during the three seminars.More people should and must come to these seminars in the future as we want to continue to give quality and accurate information ".

"As indeed all those and unknown workers who have contributed towards the great succes of these seminars."

The Seminar on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse proved to be a great success.

The former substance users stood up and inform the gathering in detail of their fight to conquer the adiction when in fact at the end they have won, but they had to endure life living in squatter, a string of jail sentences span over 15 years and how they came forward to seek help.

They emphasised the reason they have won, is that they wanted to get out of this addiction as they did realise drugs were killing their internal organs.

They made a plea to all who are suffering from addiction either alcohol or illegal drugs misuse to seek help and to come forward as there are people who are trained to give them help and advice in a very confidential manner.

An initial phone call on 020 8379 5622 may be the most important call in saving someones life.

Lesley Johnson, and Faye gave an insight talk into a number of drugs

and what effect they have on the body and brain.

The event was well ateended and this was covered by no less than 2 television channels and numerous reporters from local and international papers.

George Savva said the demand should have never been there in the first place and if wqe all try toi eliminate the use of these illegal substances thrn perhaps those countries who smuggle illegal substances in thIis country will stop, if the demand was not there in the first place.

Blue plaque for missionary Gladys goes back on wall

Job done: Councillor George Savva with Gladys Aylward deputy head Paul Phillips

Job done: Councillor George Savva with Gladys Aylward deputy head Paul Phillips

A NEW blue plaque commemorating a missionary made famous in a Hollywood film will replace the original which had been ripped down.

The original plaque, which commemorated Gladys Aylward, was taken down by tenants of a house in Cheddington Road, Edmonton, in April, causing outrage among other local residents.

Despite repeated appeals for it to be replaced, the landlady of the property has finally agreed that another plaque can take its place.

Haselbury ward councillor George Savva led the original protest and Gladys Aylward School, in Windmill Road, Edmonton, and the Enfield Society have agreed to share the bill for a new plaque at a cost of just under £ 700.

Mr Savva said: "After a long campaign I'm glad the owner has agreed to allow us to put the plaque back. The plaque is something that Edmonton should be proud of and we should look after these things because it's our heritage. "

Born into a working class family in 1902, Gladys grew up in Edmonton, but travelled to China in the 1930s to work as a missionary.

When the Japanese invaded in 1938 she helped evacuate nearly 100 children over the mountains. Her life was immortalised in the Ingrid Bergman film, The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness.

Paul Phillips, deputy headteacher at Gladys Aylward School, said: "We've a small legacy of artefacts from her life and times. We want to do more work with the community and she's a good role model. It's also good to show that Edmonton has a history. The owners have agreed to keep it there and let us know if there's any damage. "

Swine Flu Serious Situation
Swine flu.
Whilst I appreciate that it is not wise to carry out a scaremongering activity this is not by any means my goal but to simply ask if local authorities can inform and remind people that this epidemic has affected over 4.000 people ( we know of)so far when in fact a few weeks ago it was just over only 400.
Those who may catch it now may consider themselves lucky as indeed by the Early autumn those who catch it during the winter months may not be in a position to overcome the virus.

This is why I will like to ask if it will be wise to start giving vulnerable people the jab, soon, as people such as those with diabetes and other illneses, the elderly and young people also who my be most at risk.

I am not a medical expert but is it not true that we do give flu jabs to the very same people in the Early Autumn.

The swine flu jabs should be made readily available and be given to all if we are to avoid a serious pandemic of biblical proportions later on this year.

This is a serious issue to keep it low profile and how do we know, that the figure given is only 4.000
and not double that.

We should continue the good hygienic practices but will that be enough?

If you think you have the virus stay at home and call te doctor. Alternatively call the free number0800 1 513 513.

Drink plenty of fluids and take the over the counter medicines by asking your chemist for advice.
Please send us your thoughts through this website and share with others.

Action On Swine Flu Pandemic
Below a brief from Enfield Council and the latest news.

On Wednesday evening the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 5. The declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent. In response NHS Enfield has instituted the Pandemic Flu Plan which is being lead by Dr. Shahed Ahmad, the Director of Public Health. To date there have been 5 confirmed swine flu cases in the UK and 230 suspected cases. Nationally investigations and testing are continuing to determine the severity of the disease and the ease with which it can spread. These investigations are currently being undertaken with the support of the WHO. At this stage there is every indication that the human swine flu, of the H1N1 type, can be effectively treated with the antiviral oseltamavir (Tamiflu®) and zanamivir (Relenza®). To date there have been three reported cases in Enfield. None have been confirmed as swine flu. There has however been one confirmed case in Barnet, a 22 year old man who is reported to be responding well totreatment. The situation in Enfield has been closely monitored and, following theissuing of a level 5 Pandemic Alert, a decision was taken by the duty Emergency Management Team Gold Coordinator to activate the Council Pandemic Flu Committee in accordance with the LB Enfield Pandemic Flu Plan. The first meeting was held at 1630 hours today (30 April 2009). The role of the Council Pandemic Flu Team as defined in the LB Enfield Pandemic Flu Plan is to: Receive information from the Emergency Planning Officer (EPO),reporting back from the Multi-agency NHS Enfield Pandemic Flu Committee, Local Resilience Forum and Civil Protection Partnership Meetings Monitor the impact on services and across the borough Manage the situation as it develops Define action points based on recommendations and requests from the NHS Activate infection control and business continuity measures across the borough as appropriate Maintain and arrange the provision of information to staff and the public via the Customer Services Centre, the website and local press.Send a representative at the appropriate level to attendlocal/regional pandemic control team meetings as requested by theHealth Protection Agency (HPA) A Corporate Management Board Sub Group consisting of Director ESS, Director F&CR and Director HASC is being formed to provide an information conduit between the Council Pandemic Flu Committee and CMB. This group will meetdaily to review developments. Close liaison has been established with Enfield PCT. Council representatives attended the initial meeting of the Enfield PCT PandemicFlu Committee at 1400 hours today. (30th April 2009). The Health Protection Agency is monitoring all confirmed cases to examine the epidemiology and allow the potential progress of the outbreak to bemodelled. The Council have undertaken all relevant Phase 5 actions required of Local Authorities that are detailed in the ‘London Regional Resilience Influenza Pandemic Plan’ and individual Council services have been instructed to review their Business Continuity Plans to ensure that they are current and contact details are up to date. Information is being provided to Schoolsby ECSL and information will shortly be provided to our staff. As I am sure you will appreciate this is a very dynamic situation, howeverI shall endeavour to make sure that you are kept updated of any significant developments affecting the Borough.
